For all yourSummer Concerts in the Park picnic needs 43 Malaga Cove Plaza Palos Verdes Estates, CA 90274 (310) 375-2683 Wednesday , July 24, 2002 PRESENTED BY: The Malaga Cove Business & Professional Association IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE Palos Verdes Police Officers Association Tin Drum Sponsored by Malaga Cove Ranch Market T O N I G HT’S P E R F O R M E R S Tin Drum An ensemble of seasoned professional musicians who are continually striving to exceed the boundaries of well worn trends to capture a uniquely invigorating fresh contemporary sound. The Southern California based band has released two CD’s Real World (1995) and Small Parade (2001). Both are representa-tive the groups passions and successfully demonstrate their ability to deliver a palette of original music with an intimate and personal style. At the band’s nucleus is the husband-wife team of Burleigh Drummond and Mary Harris, two veterans of American rock music who continue to thrive individually, and together in Tin Drum as strong singing song-writing part-ners. Drummond was a founding member, and is still the drummer of AM-BROSIA. A group which helped to define the sound of popular music in the 1970’s and ‘80’s with a string of hits and subsequent Grammy nominations. Harris honed her skills and established a well earned reputation as a multi-talented artist, both in the studio and “on the road” with Pink Floyd, XTC, Stanley Clarke and Jimmy Buffet. Mick Mahan (bass) and Larry Treadwell (guitar, mandolin and vocals) are skilled musicians who contribute depth, and further define the band. Mahan is also the bassist for Pat Benatar. Treadwell has worked with the likes of Thomas Dolby, et al. The band maintains close ties, and continues to work with industry stars such as the “legendary” master producer Alan Parsons, who contributed production assistance on “Surrender” from the band debut release Real World. The group’s name comes from Gunter Grass’ novel, The Tin Drum, a book about a boy who decides that staying young is preferable to growing up. The name is especially appropriate because the music of Tin Drum is, at times, incredible playful, especially when Drummond’s up-tempo percussions are complemented with crisp vocals and intoxicating harmonies. But a deeper exploration reveals rich, complex ar-rangements and a mature view of the world revealed through lyrics which are reflective of the ethereal content of dreams, as well as the concrete issues of everyday living. Individually, the tracks stand alone as examples of gifted composition. Collectively the works are compelling layers of a greater musical structure. The notion at the heart of TIN DRUM is that “music never ages, but it does grow up.” Mr. Ed Lucy Professor Of Jazz/Bass Studies at the Los Angeles Music Academy will be filling in for Mick Mahan who is currently on tour with Pat Benetar. Note that due to logistics of the venue (limited to four band members only) portions of songs which are typically played on guitar (by Mr. Larry Treadwell) have been rearranged specifically for tonight’s performance to feature Mr. Einstein Brown on steel drums.
