On June 13th, 1999
By Andy Verdi

hi pat and billie!! andy here , in all the maylay that is my hectic life i
wanted to get this review in as it was probably one of the best times in my
life !! here goes sunday /6/13/99 ambrosia @ the national music
center:lenox mass. this evening was a great one ,the venue is nestled in the heart
of the berkshire,s .the venue was the nicest place id been to see a show in
along time .the show was put on and promoted by longtime ambrosia friend
gordie hebler(thanks again gordie!!). i got there in time to see les lokey
take the stage , she sounded fantastic the highlights included gordie hebler
as her drummer, at that point i had not met him yet , and he sounded great
playing in her band ,my friend and i assumed he was the drummer all the
time, joe joined her on bass ,burleigh played percussion ,she also had a keyboard
player , and a lead guitarist that sang great as well. mike keneally joined
her for a couple tunes ,les did a great version of lennons "mother" burned
upand shining sounded phenomenal, she was very animated and had a great set.

nextup was saturday night live /hall and oats veterans g.e smith with tbone
walker on bass and gary burke on drums .g.e. is besides a great guitar player ,
a very talented singer .his set included reworkings of several blues
standards highlights included, the cookoo, which he linked to his roots in
virginia ,and a reworked version of route 66 for bass guitar and drums ,
theyare great musicians and put on a fantastic set.

next up ambrosia, mikekeneally filled in for dave pack (and nailed daves guitar parts )
joe was under the weather tonight, however he sang most of his major parts ,any and
all joe is a great thing!!.shem and tollak took on the lead vocals famously
and the show was great . heres the set...

1. nice. nice-tollak -harp solo,shem-lead vocal, gordie hebler did backup vocals and sounded great.

2. livin on my own-tollack ,lead vocal-shem sang the mid part ,incredible!

3. time waits for no one-shem lead vocal with joe, chris played great on this along with somerousing handclap percussion

4. kamikaze-gordie sang lead on this and was
helpedby joe , what a treat to get this song ,the band played great especially
thesolo section with mike taking a burning guitar solo.

5. how much i feel -
shem took the lead vocal here, and tollak took the "so you try , try to stay in
the middle" part they as well as the band sounding great .can you tell i'm
enjoying this show yet?

6. and-burleigh lead vocal (great)

7. somewhere i've never travelled
-shem lead vocal, mike took a great guitar solo.shem had a great
keyboard glockenspiel sound!!.

8. i wanna know - tollak lead vocal,great job
you could tell this was one joe wanted to own ,but tollack had the honors
this night.sounded great ! very cool groove for this one.chris and mike
traded some great riffs on this one!

9. life beyond l.a. - shem-lead vocal
awesome job , chris took a great organ solo, i find there are many hammond
b-3 players out there but no one can make one sound like chris does .the
hammond is a wild keyboard and no 2 are alike, for chris to do what he does
,it's fantastic ! this guy needs to be in there with the emersons, wakemans
and argents of the world! he deserves more recognition in the music world yet i
think he enjoys flying under the radar :-) .

10. -holdin on to yesterday
-tollak took a great harmonica intro ,shem took the lead vocal with joe and
burliegh doing harmonies .this song is one of my all time favorites and to
hear them performing it live was in a word awesome. they came back on ,with
gordie for the encore , joe mentioned they performed this for "bill and
hillary" and broke into.........

11.-biggest part of me -shem sounded great taking
dave's lead vocal ,gordie played percussion ,burliegh and joe sang backups , and
chris did a nice organ fill in lieu of the sax part .fantastic!

ambrosia is returning to new england november 6th at foxwoods casino .
please do notmiss them ! !! its that good !! after the show we got to meet all the guys .
joe truly is the heart of ambrosia! very personable ! it makes the fans feel
great to be able to chat with the band and to have them be as humble as they
are .they TRULY are great people .i got to have my pictures taken with the

Review Of The Ambrosia Concert At The Club Caprice In Redondo Beach, CA
On June 19th, 1999
By Glen Fleetwood

I knew this evening was going to be great, when a certain Ambrosia insider told me he had arranged for a backstage visit after the show.

I arrived late, thanks to my neighbor not being ready on time, and heard the opening act, Shem! He was absolutely great. He sings as well as he plays. He did mostly his own tunes, but when he did a Sting number, he made it completely his own. To me, that is always a sign of class.

We had good seats, just off to the left of the stage. I noticed right away the sound was crystal clear. While Shem played, I asked the waitress about the marked improvement in sound. She happily informed me that the club had a new owner, and all the employees were celebrating. With two of the new speakers pointed right at the table, the sound was great; not too loud, and every instrument audible. The sound stayed this good throughout Ambrosia.

The club was only two-thirds full, for some impossible-to-fathom reason. But there were benefits to this goof by the public; Club Caprice tends to get noisy with talkers in the rear section. The crowd was very respectful last night. And the band earned the respect. But I also noticed the club had new lighting, (that the band used to full advantage). Colored moving lights, spotlights, all precisely timed, AND, good food and wine were served.

"Kid No More," then "Nice, Nice" both sounded good, but I began to worry this was just a repeat of the Cerritos show. Just played better, with more enthusiasm.

"Time Waits for No One" performed with the necessary precision. "You’re the Only Woman" with an introduction to a couple that got engaged with the spotlight on them, right before Ambrosia came out. Must be tough to say "No" under those circumstances. But the band was playing with great verve, and the audience was rapt with each time change. The band seemed to be having so much fun playing. I remembered there were some hard feelings between certain Ambrosia-persons and Club Caprice; I began to surmise that maybe the new ownership of the club, in conjunction with the liberated and relieved attitude of the employees (akin to "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead"), had lifted the band’s collective spirit as well.

"Holdin’ on To Yesterday," just great with a very powerful ending. At this point, I was anticipating the live album. And I did notice a video being made of most of the evenings’ performance, by someone with a very conspicuous backstage pass. So, Pat B. has his work cut out for him.

A truly moving version of "I Want to Know," with Chris and Tollak adding those great runs during the "I want to see though all the barriers.." portion.

"How Much I Feel," just great as usual. I noticed that there was no longer any wood-block played by Shem during the song (see my review of the Cerritos show). Vast improvement. I wonder if my review had any effect on the band? There’s a heady thought.

My last writing lamented the lack of unusual material at the Cerritos show. NO such problem tonight. "Freak Show," followed by "Hopes and Dreams." And I was happy to see Dave really getting into the playing of Joe’s new songs, as did the rest of the band. No selfishness there. Then, Joe’s best moment, a new song, that was solo Joe. Dedicated to his cousin’s recently deceased son, named JD. It was beautiful. During the intro, a drunken patron yelled for "Harvey" and Joe gracefully deflected the interruption, Thank goodness the bouncers did not throw the requester out of the club. I could not have reviewed the rest of the show! We were then treated to "Magical Mystery Tour."

"Life Beyond LA," and "Angola" both sounding as good as I have heard them. "And/Somewhere I Never Traveled," with Burleigh singing a cappella some difficult key changes. Just great, with a very appreciative audience. It was obvious "the boys" were getting along and enjoyed playing together.

For the two encores(!) we got "No Big Deal," "Biggest Part of Me’, and "Mama Frog." The audience loved them. Ambrosia played as well, and looked as happy, as I have ever seen them. Later, backstage(!),  Burleigh  told me they had just played eight dates back east, and so were really tight; he was right. .

And thanks, yappy.
